Active Machining Systems (AMS)
AMS is the fastest, most rigid and accurate fast tool servo system on the market specifically
designed to turn the non-round skirts of pistons. It is synchronized to the rotation of
machine tool spindles. The solid-state position of the tool is controlled by the
elongation of a solid bar of ETREMA Terfenol-D. By mounting
the tool to activate along the X axis of a machine tool, oval parts can be turned. The
dynamic mass of the system has purposefully been kept low in order to minimize the
accelerations seen at the machine tooling plate. This combination of rigidity, speed, and
mass makes the AMS system the ideal choice for manufacturers of large volumes of pistons.

The AMS' unique combination of attributes makes it ideal for rapidly positioning a cutting
insert for turning elliptical pistons. The basic AMS system is capable of machining ovals
at speeds up to 6000 RPM.
Rigidity - unlike voice-coil technology, the position of the tooling insert is
generated by the change in shape of Terfenol-D. Thus,
the tool position is extremely rigid. What this means is that AMS is able to handle
interrupted cuts without vibrating - thereby increasing the quality of surface finish.
Speed - The speed of motion can be extremely fast. Terfenol-D has been used to actuate
devices at over 20,000 cycles per second. In comparison, machining pistons requires
relatively slow operation at 200 cycles per second. What this means is that is that
there is sufficient bandwidth to reject disturbances from interrupted cuts arising from
voids in the castings and wrist pin axis 'windows' designed into the piston, thereby
giving excellent surface finish at production spindle rates.
Reliability - The mechanism that generates the change in shape of the material is 'cast in'
to the alloy at the time of manufacture. What this means is that the material will
never lose its ability to change shape. Other types of shape change materials can not
make this claim. The popular piezoceramic materials are artificially poled after
manufacture. Heat and operating cycles will cause these materials to degrade over time.
Billions of operational cycles have proven that Terfenol-D does not have this same issue.

AMS was designed for the automotive piston manufacturing industry. However, this product is
also directly applicable to both small piston manufacturers, such as lawn and garden engine
suppliers. In addition, industrial pistons such as off-road, agriculture, and marine diesel
pistons can also be machined with this product.

Other potential areas of application include cam machining, butterfly valve disks,
diamond-turning contact lenses and other glass lenses, and non-round boring
(for example, wrist bin holes in pistons or connecting rod bearings).
Several small engine piston manufacturers currently utilize AMS technology. Each customer
has multiple AMS machines currently running production. The first production machine
was installed in June, 2001.
